Asturias (Leyenda) guitar sheet music with tabs

Spread the music 🎶

Isaac Albéniz’s Asturias (also known as Leyenda) is one of the most recognizable and beloved pieces in the classical guitar repertoire. Originally written for piano as part of his Suite Española, Op. 47 in 1886, this iconic work has truly found its home on the guitar, where its Spanish character and dramatic flair really shine.

This higher intermediate to advanced piece will challenge you with its signature tremolo passages, flamenco-inspired rhythms, and demanding fingerpicking patterns. Whether you’re working on precision, dynamics, or building endurance in your right hand, this piece will push your playing to the next level.

Let’s dive in!

What You’ll Learn From This Piece

Asturias will push you to grow in several key areas of classical guitar technique:

  • Tremolo technique: The signature flowing melodic lines require smooth, even tremolo execution
  • Dynamic contrast: Balancing powerful, dramatic sections with delicate, lyrical passages
  • Left-hand stretches: Some demanding fingering patterns that will expand your fretboard reach
  • Rhythmic precision: Maintaining steady pulse through complex passages

Practice Tips

It’s best to break this piece into smaller sections as you learn it, especially before jumping into the more technically demanding tremolo part later on. This will give you time to build solid finger coordination, work on the rhythmic feel, and get comfortable with the right-hand patterns. Once the earlier sections feel more natural, you’ll be in a much better place to take on the more intricate parts with confidence.

The following tabs come with suggested fingerings, but keep in mind that some passages may be adjusted based on your technical preferences.

Don’t worry about the dynamics at first, just focus on getting the notes clean first. Once you’re comfortable with the fingering and can play through a section smoothly, then start shaping the sound with dynamics and expression to bring the piece to life.

This guitar arrangement draws inspiration from guitarists like Ana Vidovic, David Russell, John Williams and Andrés Segovia.

The numbers next to some notes on the top staff indicate which fingers to use on the fretting hand.

The problem isn't your talent. It's your path.

If you've been playing for years and still feel stuck in the same place, you don't need more lessons. You need a clear path.

"I admit it, I was stuck, had been for years. Then I came across an email that said the words I was looking for: roadmap. The structure has given me renewed purpose. It's starting to all move forward."
